Commissioning a picture is a unique process. The nature of the collaboration between Artist and client means that the finished picture is always highly individual and very personal.
Katie e-mailed me via the website around 12 weeks before her birthday armed with an idea for a picture for her lounge and a promise from her husband to pay for this special present. She knew the size of the canvas she wanted, she knew the colours she needed for the picture to work in her space, and she knew what it was she liked in my work that she wanted for her wall. We started to correspond over the next couple of weeks and we spoke on the phone and gradually we built up the basis for the picture together.
Katies final brief:
- Huge Canvas - 6 feet wide x 2 feet high
- Natural colours and tones
- A calm relaxing atmosphere
- Radiating light
- Trees, lots of trees!
- A log cabin
- All completed in the style Katie had seen on the website
With the price settled, I sent Katie four initial sketches [just very rough ideas to start the ball rolling] combining all the elements she'd asked for along with a sample of the colours available. After talking it through with her husband, Katie chose this sketch. She liked the simple calm composition and happy with the colours, she trusted me to then do the rest. Katies husband sent a cheque through and I ordered the materials. Once everything was in place, I made one final check with Katie that she hadn't had second thoughts and I started work.

Time scale: In this case, as time was not too much of an issue, the discussions, preparatory sketches, painting and finishing took 9 weeks [from first e-mail to collection of finished piece]. Time scales vary dependent on commitments etc. Usually 5 to 10 weeks.
